The not-so-hip(hop) Mom

So, summer break is officially in session and I've finally got a few days off from work.....thank the Lord. The kids have swim practice 4 mornings a week and this week we've squeezed in Vacation Bible School.

Let me preface this whole story by a hopefully brief explanation. I grew up in a house where my dad owned a radio station....not just ANY radio station. A station whose claim to fame was "easy listening" music, which can also be defined as music with no lyrics, elevator music, Musak, and lastly, doctor's office music. You get the picture.

As I grew older, for various reasons, I wasn't really allowed to listen to popular music. I mostly grew up listening to Contemporary Christian music. However, in my adulthood I have grown to love some of the music I "missed out" on as a youth.

My iPod is mostly filled with Contemporary Christian music with a small variety of other music genres. My car radio is usually on the local Christian station but on occasion I switch it to other stations.

I'm also VERY bad at "name that tune" and "who sings that song", unless it is Michael W. Smith.

(which FINALLY brings me to the purpose of today's post)

Yesterday the kids and I are riding in the car, I switch the radio from one station to another. Fate had me stop on a local pop-rock station. After a few seconds, I notice the Princess singing ALL the words to the song on the radio. Then the following conversation occurred:

Me: "Princess, how do you know this song? I've never heard it."

Princess: "This song is 'Fireflies'"

Me: "Oh, really?"

LegoMan: "Owl City sings it, Mom"

Me: "What? Who? Owl City?"

LegoMan: "You've never heard of Owl City????" (followed by a laugh)

Me: "Whatever"

Because everyone likes smarty-pants-know-it-all kids. Right?!

In case you are not in the know, here's the song:

Sunday Sunday

It’s been a BIG weekend at our church.  We have been looking for a new pastor for the last 9 months and this weekend God answered our prayers….in a BIG way!

Today our search ended and our new pastor begins in 3 weeks.  Church was packed today and you could feel and see the excitement.

God has GREAT things in store for our church!

Our weekend was topped off tonight by our children’s music program, WHAM ….Worshipping Him through Arts and Music.

Just like in her chapel program, the Princess had a singing part.   This time she sang in a trio.  Perhaps this is the new norm for her….my singing sister will be proud!

And I’m oh so proud to say, he dances just like his white-to-the-bone Mama.

I am SO proud of him!!  There was a time in his life, not very long ago, that I would have bet against him actually doing this.  I guess this is a sure sign he’s growing up on me.  *sniff*

And check out this presentation his group did:

Thanks for letting me share this with you all.  I hope everyone else had a good weekend.  I know we did!

A Star is Born

This week the hubby and I had the privilege of attending the kid’s Easter Chapel program at their school.

The 2nd grade classes hosted the chapel by sharing Bible verses and singing songs.

And guess who got to sing her very first solo ever:

I hate to admit this, but despite her high level of attention getting tactics I slightly thought she would get up there and balk, if not bail. She did not.

The Princess went right up there and acted like she had done this before. And you can tell at the end, she was quite pleased with herself.

And we are PROUD parents.
