Flashback Friday-- March Madness

I've decided that Friday will be the day I flashback to the past. If you feel inclined to join in the fun, I hope to have a cute button and Mr. Linky up for next week. If not, I'm not ashamed to party alone.


In honor of March Madness, this week I bring to you some photos from my high school days. May I interject here the 80's were certainly the best decade....like totally.

Many of you are probably not aware that I was a basketball super star player back in the day. I began my basketball career in 9th grade and actually played on scholarship my freshman year of college. There was no WNBA in the mid 80's so I decided to retired my high tops and have a little fun playing intramural ball.

True story: The one and ONLY time I scored a basket in the wrong goal was at my college's Parent's Day celebration. The President of the college referred to me as "Wrong Way" in front of the entire crowd. Ummm, yea.


Oh yes, back to why we are here. I'm not sure words are needed for these.....

I attended Christian high schools, and we had the privilege of wearing tents culottes. Ya' know, so the nice boys wouldn't be distracted by my hot legs. Or maybe there was a verse in the Bible that says, "Ye shall cover thine basketball legs with excessive fabric, which shall be called culottes."

I'm bringing IT back!

Those retro picture posts originated with Kristen of We Are THAT Family and, eventually, was passed on to Marcy of The Glamorous Life. I cannot tell you how sad I was the day this particular blog "party" ended. I am almost certain I went through the grief process for several weeks afterward.

I love retro pictures dearly and want to do a weekly blog post called "Throw Back Thursday", or maybe "Flashback Friday". Perhaps, I can come up with something a little more creative...then again, maybe not. I have missed throwing myself and whomever else under the retro-picture bus.

With all that said.......I'm bringing RETRO BACK!!

This week's photo is from my college days. Just for a point of reference, I will be celebrating my 20th college reunion in April of this year.

I went to a Baptist women's college in a small Southern town. Thirty minutes away was a slightly larger town, and an hour away was the city in which I live now. Needless to say, there was no Internet or Facebook back in the day and we lacked a little in the entertainment department. Unless you call cruising the square or hanging out at the local Hardee's over-the-top fun. And, seriously, one can only watch "Top Gun" and "Dirty Dancing" so many times.

Have no fear, "girls" that attend a small women's college are VERY creative and didn't have to leave the dorm for a good time. As evidenced by this photo of yours truly:






Dear blog readers, I present to you what we called the "Tide Slide". Tide meaning the soap we put on the floor, and Slide meaning, well, how we got from one end of the dorm hallway to the other.

At the nursing home, we shall call this "instant trip to the hospital", the "hip breaker" or maybe we will just call it, "maw-maw's last slide".

Looking at this photo brings back so many great memories of a day gone by. And also thankful, that my body still looks that great after 20 years, two children and the death of my thyroid.....*cough* *cough*

70’s Halloween, ‘Fro Me to You

I had to dig deep in the box to come up with this week’s photos for Kristen’s Thursday fun. You know if I had to dig in a box to get these, they certainly were not scrapbook worthy. But maybe they will be one day.

I am not exactly certain of the year, but I can assure you it was in the EARLY 1970’s when these photos were taken. I wish I could tell you what my twin sister and I were dressed up as….it appears as there might have been an Asian theme going on *shrug*

There certainly was a 70’s theme going on with those curtains and faux brick vinyl flooring.

The next photo is not really about me stuffing my face with the Halloween loot, because clearly my mother rationed the candy immediately upon entering the house. I mean, really, there are only 3 pieces of candy on the floor beside my VERY small pumpkin! Plus our neighborhood was quite large.

And the last photo is not about wondering exactly what my sister has in her mouth. It’s all about what is going on in our 1970’s Formal Living/Dining Room.

Technically this post should be saved for my usual fun Thursday post, but due to lack of creativity today I am posting it now. Besides, I have PLENTY of photos for Thursdays.

For those of you hip, like me, who have a facebook account, imagine my surprise when I logged into today to find that a couple of my dear college friends had uploaded photos from our college days. This is clearly why “older” people should not have scanners, much less know how to use them.

To set the stage for what you are about to see:

• I attended college from 1986-1990 – so remember it was STILL the 80’s, and the decade rules
• I attended Judson College, a Baptist women’s college here in Alabama
• During my sophomore year, the college celebrated its 150th year—otherwise known as the Sesquicentennial—or as we all referred to it as the ses-QUIIII-centennial
• I studied a fair amount, despite high popularity and a paparazzi following because I was a geek, a chemistry and biology geek

This photo is of me and my friend Jules. We are wearing our required Sesquicentennial dress. My sticker reads that I am a “hostess”, I don’t think it said with the mostess. *shrug* Perhaps you find it odd that we are taking our photo with our anatomy lab guide. I do too. Can’t remember why?

This photo is of me and my science peeps. We must have been studying for some huge exam. It’s probably the only photo of my thighs that I am willing to share with you on the Internet. Wow, what 20 years, 2 kids and the “death” of a thyroid can do to a woman. *sigh*

Now, for the piece de resistance. The middle gal is the infamous Teresa of Livin’ the Wood Life, also known as Miss Juson 1989. This photo is just too much: too much 80’s and certainly too much print fabric! On the bright side we all looked happy despite our obvious fashion errors.

These were just three of the retro photos that had me gasping for air earlier tonight and there were several more! War has been declared and I’m sure there will be a Guinness record of photo finding and scanning going on this week.

Have no fear, I am poised and scanner ready ladies. Be afraid, be very afraid!
