I bring to you week one of my ‘Fro Christmas spectacle Spectacular of 2008.
Over the next few weeks, I will share with you some photos of Christmas past that have NEVER graced the insides of any scrapbook.
Like many others, Christmas is probably my favorite holiday. I have so many GREAT memories from the Christmases of my childhood.
Each year, my mother would put up the Christmas tree while playing a stack of classic Christmas albums. And every now and again, she would open up the console and rearrange the albums for a bit of variety. She certainly was WAY ahead of the iPod shuffle button.
And by just looking at photos bring back so many specific memories of days gone by.
Take, for example, this little gem:
You may look at this photo and think, “poor little girl with the bad hairstyle and ratty clothes and *gasp* corrective shoes?!”
But, I see LOTS of good things:
I remember this being a favorite toy, and each doll had Velcro hands so they could stick together, as you see I had arranged in the photo.
That particular Mickey Mouse “walked” when you squeezed his hands, which, I’m sure, was technologically advanced for the 70’s. Who else LOVED the Happy Days game??
I shutter to think that I actually requested a suitcase decorated in a brown/yellow/orange floral pattern. If that doesn’t represent life in the 70’s then I don’t know what does!
I do still have one “beef” with my mother over a gift I received this particular year…which was about 1977. My Yaya gave me a Rock Tumbler, which turned ordinary rocks into extraordinary “gems” by being tumbled in this machine.
Well, in order to accomplish this magical feat, the rocks had to tumble for over 24 hours. So what’s the big deal you may ask???? I dunno, but my Mom never let me use this…perhaps she thought it would burn the house down. *shrug*
I can’t talk about it anymore…..*sniff*
For more ‘Fro Me to You spectacles spectacular photos, head on over to Kristen’s place HERE and enjoy the best day in blogland!
Why not live a little…..bust out YOUR ‘Fro pictures and join in the fun. You and I both know you have some you can share!

That was such a retro post! Brings back memories for me too.
I wanted one of those barking dogs that walked and then flipped...my mom NEVER bought me one. :(
You've taken me back .... and made me laugh! I love this picture. I think you can forgive your mom for the rock tumbler mistake---she did get you corrective shoes.
And if that's not love...I don't know what is!
Perhaps your mother feared for her sanity when she thought about having to listen to rocks tumble around for 24 hours. I know that incessant sound would certainly do it for me!
The way you word things always leaves me giggling. I remember the Mickey which leads me to believe that I either had one or played with my cousin's.
And my dad is giving my son a rock tumbler for Christmas :)
you and your loot is a hoot!
I loved that Mickey! I wanted that Mickey! Instead, my sister got that Mickey! But I'm not bitter.
so sorry about the rock tumbler - but it looks like you had a great christmas!!!!
My mum got my brother the rock tumbler and I wanted to her...it was SO loud!
Great memories!
I believe those look like swoop bangs and they are very in these days so you my dear are way ahead of the times, maybe like your mother...
I always wondered if a rock tumbler really worked ... now I guess I'll never know!
hooray for retro Christmas posts... I just got mine up. Though yours is way better. I'm loving that suitcase...matches my grandma's couch!
I loved this post.. It took me back..right down to the shoes ;-)
You're always so hard on yourself, but I think you were very cute!
I went home this past week and my goal was to get the 1974 - 1984 photo album scanned so that I could participate in this hysterical and memorable Fro Me to You. Lets just say I'll attempt it again in the spring.
My suitcase was white, purple and blue as I recall. What a hoot!
I had a similar suitcase but it was more in the oranges hues. Oh it was so trendy!:)
My sister had the Mickey Mouse, too! Great post! Brings back all kinds of memories.
I love the line about your mom being way ahead of the Ipod shuffle....
Oh my. Hilarious.
Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my first Sincerely Fro Me To You post...I felt so welcomed by everyone!
